This project starting with a curiosity around submarine and the undiscovered world below. I also knew I had limitations with the shape due to lack of correct tools. Initial sketches were quite square in there appearance to reflect what I though I could achieve.
After experimenting with shape and finishes to see what was achievable I decided I wasn't happy with what I was coming up with. It was at this time that I looked into being able to use machinery that would allow me to make the correct shape.
I mocked up the rough shape I wanted the end submarine to be. This allowed me to create CAD orthographics to work from when in the workshop.
Once having access to the correct machinery I was able to create the required shape. The taper was smooth and consistent rather than uneven and angular.
Working on the lathe meant I was able to create the even submarine body. It's very much a playful submarine rather than replicating a real one. The main body was made out out of walnut and the periscope and propeller out of aluminium.
I wanted to create packaging that was in keeping with this project and linked back to why I started it. The undiscovered world below sparked imagery of old ships being destroyed my large octopuses or krakens. I drew this older looking octopus to place on the packaging.
When I started this project I had no idea how it'd end. I was able to learn new methods and get the project to a sellable point. These submarines have ended up in different locations across Britain and are now sold out. I did a limited run to see what I can achieve and I enjoyed every moment.
